The mobile web atlas of Asia Pacific

The Asian continent has been a boon to,economic and technological development over the last few decades. Rapid uptake of technology as soon as it is economically available to users is a trend we see in many Asian countries, especially with the Opera Mini web browser for both smartphones and feature phones.

This month in the State of the Mobile Web report, we take a look at the Asia Pacific region in the State of the Mobile Web report. Overall, there is strong growth in the number of users and they view more and more web pages. One interesting trend observed while gathering this information is the strong growth of smartphones as the preferred device for many users in the area.

While the feature phone is still strong in the region, we see that some countries, such as Indonesia, have experienced a sharp increase in smartphone owners using Opera Mini or Opera Mobile products. For e.g. Indonesia, the number of Opera Mini users on smartphones has increased more than 460% in July 2012 since July 2011. For the whole Asia Pacific region, the increase in usage of Opera Mini on smartphones during the same period is significant. From having 9% of Opera Mini users on smartphones in July 2011, the share of Opera Mini smartphone users in Asia Pacific countries increased to 32% in July 2012. Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam are also strong smartphone growth areas in the Asia Pacific region, according to anonymous and aggregated data from the Opera Mini servers.

Other key trends include:

  • Facebook is the undisputed top domain for most countries surveyed, with top placement in 16 of 25 countries.
  • The most popular sites are Facebook, Google and YouTube. In fact, this exact combination and order is repeated in most of the countries' top three list of domains.
  • Only two countries, China and Japan, featured a different website as their top-visited domain.
  • Local news and classified sites are also popular in Asia Pacific countries. 16 out of the 25 countries have local news or classified sites in the top 10 lists, in strong competition to international news sites.
  • The country of Myanmar (Burma) sees particularly strong growth out of the larger Asia Pacific countries, with a 900% growth in users and 500+ % growth in pageviews.

Growth

As of the April 2012 State of the Mobile Web, we now report both Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers. Read more about this change.

In July 2012, the consumer base of the Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers increased in unique users. In all, more than 205.7 million people used Opera Mini or Opera Mobile in July. The Opera Mini servers (which do not process pages from Opera Mobile browsers) served 116 billion pages and compressed over 21 petabytes of data for Opera Mini users.

Number of mobile product users

In July 2012, there were over 205.7 million Opera Mini and Opera Mobile users. Out of this number, more than 18 million were Opera Mobile users, and the rest were Opera Mini users. Compared to July 2011, Opera Mini and Opera Mobile combined grew more than 43% year over year.
