Part 1: Libya returns to the Internet

Opera Mini usage worldwide usually grows at a consistent 5% to 10% per month, each month. This month we take a peek into the top 50 countries and highlight some interesting month-on-month changes.

• Libya users, after being practically absent from Opera Mini servers since February 16th, returned to the Opera Mini statistics in August.
• The growth of Libyan Opera Mini users has risen sharply as users discover that the Internet is once again available from their mobile phones.
• A few other interesting anomalies were observed. Usage in the United States declined 1%, but page views grew 13% and data transfers rose 11%. Australia saw its user base grow 3%, but page views and data transfers declined.
• The real story in July was Iran. It was one of just two countries in the top 50 that lost users. While we can speculate on government intervention or an operator shutting down Opera Mini access, the numbers are striking. Opera Mini usage in Iran dropped 36% in July. Most of the user loss occurred over five days, from July 4th to July 9th. Iran is no stranger to these quick drops. After reaching new highs, Opera Mini usage drops quickly. On June 14, 2011, Opera Mini reached an all-time high in Iran. The next day, usage plummeted more than 48%.
• Data transfers and page views contracted even more than the user base. Page views declined 55%, with most of the loss coming over those five days. The amount of data Iranians use shrank by 58%.

Part 2: Growth

In July 2011, the Opera Mini browser saw increases in unique users, page views and data consumed. In all, 121.7 million people used the Opera Mini browser in July, 74.0 billion pages were served, and 10.9 petabytes of operator data were compressed for Opera Mini users.

Number of users

In July 2011, there were over 121.7 million Opera Mini users, a 5.9% increase from June 2011. Since July 2010, the number of unique users has increased 95.5%.

Pages transcoded

Opera Mini users viewed over 74.0 billion pages in July 2011. Since June, page views have gone up 10.1%. Since July 2010, page views have increased 149.6%.

Data consumed

In July 2011, Opera Mini users generated over 1,170 million MB of data for operators worldwide. Since June, the data consumed went up by 9.6%. Data in the Opera Mini browser is compressed by up to 90%. If this data were uncompressed, Opera Mini users would have viewed over 10.9 petabytes of data in July. Since July 2010, data traffic is up 163.0%.

Top 10

Mexico passed China and South Africa in terms of total Opera Mini users in the month of July.

Kazakhstan and the Philippines went up in the ranking of top 20 countries. Pakistan was a new addition in July, as Poland fell off the list.
