State of the Mobile Web, November 2009

Jon S. von Tetzchner

Here we are at the end of 2009, and we cannot help but notice that Opera Mini has grown by leaps and bounds since the end of last year. Over the last 12 months, Opera Mini has grown furiously in every category of growth: number of unique users, data consumed, and page views.

The number of Opera Mini users more than doubled — from about 16.4 million in November 2008 to 41.7 million in November 2009. This increase shows that our prediction of accelerated growth of the mobile Web has come true. Rapid growth is evident, not only in developed countries, but also (and especially) in developing parts of the world such as Africa, which is the focus of this month’s geographic spotlight.

This month’s report also compares Opera Mini growth rates across different regions around the world. For example, Southeast Asia is the fastest growing region for Opera Mini in terms of page views, number of users, and data transferred. Africa, South Asia, and East Asia, respectively, come next in each of those categories.

Despite tough economic times in the past year, people continue to adopt technology — such as mobile browsing — especially when it helps them overcome their hardships. Our goal at Opera is to facilitate access to the Web across every demographic and in every country of the world — whether it is a farmer in Nigeria or a stockbroker in New York.

In Africa, for example, we saw triple-digit percentage growth in mobile Web usage in just one year. Page views in the top 10 countries increased by 374%, unique users increased by 177%, and the amount of data transferred increased by 183%.

We expect this growing streak to continue for Opera Mini and the mobile Web in general as we usher in a new decade. Happy holidays and best wishes for the New Year!

Kind Regards,
Jon S. von Tetzchner
CEO, Opera Software
